Andrea Mariana Santangelo
Oil painting & life drawing

Andrea Mariana Santangelo is a Bristol-based artist and genetic neuroscientist working in the field of mental health. Her practice exists in the charged space between science and art — between what can be measured and what can only be felt.

Working primarily in oil with a reduced or monochrome palette, Andrea explores the human figure through life drawing, portraiture and what she describes as “human landscapes.” Her paintings investigate the structures that shape us — biological, psychological and emotional — while allowing space for ambiguity and vulnerability to surface.

With the discipline of a scientist and the sensitivity of a painter, she is drawn to the tension between order and intuition. Light and shadow become tools for mapping inner states; restraint in colour creates depth rather than limitation. Across figurative and abstract works, she seeks to hold structure and emotion in balance — reflecting the complex, often unseen forces that inform identity and mental life.
