Mixed media, collage & basic printing methods

Maita Spencer Robinson grew up in a pioneering artistic family in Seattle, USA.  Her parents were studio potters who were the first in the area to earn their living from their work. Maita first started selling her work as a young girl, making little clay mice which she sold at art fairs.   After living in various places in the world she settled in Bristol where she took classes at the RWA and Spike Island.  Eventually she began experimenting with mixed media and collage for fun.  The results evolved into small hand-printed and collaged images presented as cards, or larger framed pieces, with hand stamped captions full of whimsy and story-telling.

Maita says “as an artist, I love the idea of creativity that honours the effects of time and makes mischief with history.  Growing up in a society where hard cold and shiny are often highly valued, I find myself gravitating toward the opposite.  I love smoky patina and shadowy surfaces. In my work I use a variety of mixed media and collage techniques, recycled and re-purposed materials plus original ephemera to tell stories and create histories which show a world that was never quite but could have been”.  Each of her pieces is uniquely handcrafted and there may be a message or idea which may (or may not) reflect the state of our world today.

Elsewhere in her life Maita is also an award-winning soprano specialising in art song performance and, having developed the horse riding skills she acquired over many years as an equestrian competitor, she is also a dressage judge.
